Tucson is a growing metropolis of over 800,000 with a unique blend of Native American, Mexican, Spanish, African American, Asian and Anglo cultures. The city was established in 1775 by Spanish soldiers. Locally, the city is still called the Old Pueblo for the adobe fortress or "presidio" that marked its early borders. Today, Tucson is one of the fastest growing urban areas in the U.S. and is expected to reach a population of one million shortly after the turn of the century. At an elevation of 2,584 feet and spanning nearly 500 miles,Tucson is surrounded by the Santa Catalina Mountains to the north, the Rincon Mountains to the east, the Tucson Mountains to the west, and the Santa Rita and Sierrita Mountains to the south. The landscape is a beautiful mixture of lush desert trees and plants, rolling hills, winding dry riverbeds, rugged canyons, pine-topped peaks and a clear blue sky about 350 days each year. Click
